This public installation designed by BRANDT : HAFERD draws on African, Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous craft traditions to center Culture, Creativity and Care by making space to host wellness and artistic programming to the East Harlem community. The installation will be up until Summer of 2025 and will be activated throughout the months with visual art, performances, art making workshops, and a mobile food kitchen.
I became part of the assembly and installation process of this project after the incredible work the design and fabrication team did thought the conception faces.
This project is a collaboration between BRANDT : HAFERD, the Mellon Foundation Humanities in Place program and Harlem Grown, a food heritage and justice non-profit with numerous locations throughout Harlem.
The design concept for the installation comes out of working with members of the Marcus Garvey Park community. The 32-foot circular structure incorporates a gathering space below a printed fabric canopy invoking archival images, digital and AI means to depict a living “mythology” of Marcus Garvey Park and other motifs. The ribbon-cutting will coincide with a rotating exhibition opening of artwork inside the structure, featuring the work of twelve local artists.
